How the tokenisation of real world assets (RWAs) can revolutionise the $300B online education market.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the web3 space, one narrative is currently taking centre stage and proving to be more than just a trend — tokenisation of Real World Assets (RWAs). Arguably, this could be the most significant development in blockchain, surpassing previous narratives like DeFi. Why? Because RWAs have the potential to bridge the gap with web2 users on a massive scale, potentially bringing in the next 100 million users that everyone is talking about.

To truly understand the impact of RWAs, I think it’s essential that we categorise them. There are ‘tangible’ RWAs, representing physical assets in the real world, such as Gold. Additionally, there are ‘intangible’ RWAs, encompassing digital items of value, like Music (shout out to Opulous for making massive progress here!). 48% of the world’s stock market value is derived from intangible assets (Source: Brand Finance), amounting to trillions of dollars. RWAs have the power to bring both tangible and intangible value onto the blockchain, offering improved proof of ownership and transaction possibilities.

With that being said, there’s an intangible asset market which has a value of $300B a year (Source: Global market insights), and that’s the E-learning market.

As it stands, billions are spent annually on accessing e-learning, but once students complete the courses, they are left with no residual value. Reports indicate that only 3.13% of students actually complete their online courses, resulting in a potential 96%+ value waste (Source: Insider Higher Ed). This is where RWAs come into play.

How can RWAs address this issue? When a creator produces an online course (RWA) they tokenise the access to the course, therefore, students will need to purchase a tokenised access pass to access the course. Once they finish the course, they have the option to sell their access pass. If the course didn’t meet their expectations, they can recover their funds, fostering a continuous learning journey. This approach not only prevents demotivation but also encourages a lifelong learning mindset by turning education into an asset rather than a one-time expense.
